New footage has emerged of the moments leading up to China’s former leader Hu Jintao being escorted away from Xi Jinping in an apparent power play by the latter.

It shows in greater how Mr Hu takes up a prominent place next to his successor before – in what looks like a pre-planned move – outgoing Politburo member Li Zhanshu removes a file from him and talks to him.

While a clearly confused Mr Hu is looking on a steward walks up to Xi and take instructions from him before physically lifting the former leader out of his seat.

The government’s official news agency has previously reported that Mr Hu felt unwell, but what this new footage shows is his being led away on the orders of Xi shortly before he packed the party with his own loyalists.
