Axiom Space announced that its upcoming mission to the International Space Station (ISS) will feature a diverse international crew representing India, Poland, and Hungary.
The Ax-4 mission marks a significant expansion of global participation in commercial spaceflight. It is also expected to strengthen ties between the participating countries and solidify their positions as leaders in the growing space industry.
Veteran astronaut Peggy Whitson will command the 14-day mission, marking her second with Axiom Space.
Joining her are Mission Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla from India, and Mission Specialists Sławosz Uznański from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary.
The upcoming mission will mark Poland’s return to space after over four decades and the recognition of Hungary’s astronaut program, HUNOR – Hungarian to Orbit.
India’s participation in Ax-4 is also seen as a crucial step towards a joint Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and NASA effort on the ISS. Welcoming the Indo-US partnership, NASA administrator Bill Nelson posted on X: “Congratulations, ISRO. We look forward to welcoming the first ISRO astronaut to the International Space Station! This is a monumental step forward for U.S.-India partnership in space.”
Axiom Space CEO Michael Suffredini highlighted the importance of this mission in fostering global partnerships and driving innovation. “Ax-4 represents Axiom Space’s continued efforts to build opportunity for countries to research, innovate, test, and engage with people around the world while in low-Earth orbit,” he said.
Suffredini stated “Our collaboration with ESA for a second time and the inclusion of Hungary and India underscores Axiom Space’s ability to cultivate global partners, expand the scope of exploration, and open up new avenues to grow a global space economy.”
The mission will focus on scientific research, technology demonstrations, and commercial space activities.
“I look forward to commanding my second commercial human spaceflight mission with Axiom Space,” said Peggy Whitson. “With Ax-4, we ascend even higher, bringing even more nations to low-Earth orbit and expanding humanity’s reach among the stars.”
Axiom Space previous missions have broken new ground. The company’s first flight, Axiom Mission 1, was a historic all-private crew to the ISS. This was followed by Axiom Mission 2, which carried the first Saudi woman into space. And Axiom Mission 3 was the first all-European commercial mission, with Türkiye contributing its first ever astronaut.
Axiom Mission 4 is scheduled to launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft from Florida.
The crew is currently undergoing training in Houston and awaits final approval from the Multilateral Crew Operations Panel (MCOP) to fly to the ISS.
